More than 5,000 people turned up to celebrate National Playday on Wednesday 3 August at Sandwell Valley Country Park.

The free event was hosted by Sandwell Council’s Go Play team who are committed to encourage play for children in Sandwell.

Visitors were treated to free activities including giant bubbles, inflatable games, dhol drummer workshops and a giant puppet display,

Councillor Simon Hackett, Cabinet Member for Children and Education attended the event, said: “I was overwhelmed at the turnout for today’s Playday celebration at Sandwell Valley and the weather was certainly kind to us.

“Play is such an important part of childhood and is proven to help improve children’s well-being, health and development.

“I am thrilled that, with partners, we are able to host free events like these here in Sandwell to highlight the importance of play.

“Thank you to all those involved in bringing these wonderful activities for families to enjoy and thanks to those who attended.”

Playday is a national day, celebrated each year across the UK on the first Wednesday in August. It’s an opportunity to celebrate that play is for everyone, play happens everywhere, everyday and is the right of every child and young person.

The giant puppet (photographed), is called EKO is from OᑌT Oᖴ TᕼE ᗪEEᑭ ᗷᒪᑌE, an outdoor physical theatre performance, inspired by the themes of the climate emergency and the biodiversity crisis.
