Birmingham primary school pupils took part in a mini-triathlon last week as part of an event hosted by the Brownlee Foundation and Britain’s fifth-largest supermarket Aldi.

Olympic triathlete stars and founders of the Brownlee Foundation, Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, were on hand to help around 500 youngsters take on a 50-metre swim, 800-metre cycle and 300-metre run.

The event was one of many taking place across the country, with the Brownlee Foundation aiming to educate and inspire children around the importance of physical exercise.

Meanwhile, Aldi helped fund the event at Handsworth Wellbeing Centre and supplied t-shirts for the children and volunteers, along with branded drawstring bags full of healthy snacks.

Alistair Brownlee said: “Exercise is really beneficial for people’s physical and mental health throughout their lives, so it’s important to get youngsters enjoying exercise from an early age.”

Jonny Brownlee added: “Not only did the mini-triathlon give children a chance to try three sports in one go, but it was also a lot of fun and they gave it their all!”

Adam Zavalis, Marketing Director at Aldi, added: “The Brownlee Foundation is a great initiative set up by Alistair and Jonny and we couldn’t be prouder to support it. Coupled with our commitment to making healthy, great quality food accessible to everyone, we’re determined to make a real difference in helping children lead healthier and more active lives.”

Alongside supporting the Brownlee Foundation, Aldi has its own nationwide education programme, Get Set to Eat Fresh, which helps young people develop the skills required to cook nutritious, low-cost meals.

The UK’s fifth-largest supermarket has recently announced that in partnership with Team GB and ParalympicsGB, it is ramping up the programme in a bid to educate an extra one million children about affordable healthy eating by the end of 2024.
